Specialist Electronics for Crime Scene Investigators

HMS offer a unique course aimed at individuals in a forensic gathering role, designed to enhance the investigation, assessment and evidence collection skills of police officers and EOD technicians with regard to terrorist and criminal use of electronics in the construction of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

The course is accredited to a recognised body and will provide students with a professional qualification to further their job role and for career progression. The achievement of obtaining the City & Guilds Certificate in Specialist Electronics for Crime Scene Investigators will provide students with a working knowledge of how terrorists and criminals use electronic circuits to initiate IED’s.  This knowledge will enable personnel involved in the collection of evidence at a crime scene or terrorist incident to identify electronic components and give an assessment on the type of device used or recovered.

Subjects covered during the course are:

  • The Global Use of Electronics by Terrorists and Criminals
  • An Introduction to Electronics Theory
  • Remotely Controlled Improvised Explosive Devices
  • Electronic Components
  • Terrorist Use of Intruder Alarm Sensors (IAS)
  • Integrated Circuits in Improvised Explosive Devices
  • Improvised Explosive Device Construction Methods
  • Practical Electronic Circuit Building

The course is designed to marry theoretical knowledge with practical skills, thus giving the student a wider understanding of the subject and the terrorist and criminal requirements and constraints in constructing, transporting, arming and initiating explosive devices.
